CAPITOL HILL

Welcome to Capitol Hill

A bustling neighborhood where America’s rich history combines with its modern and trendy urban thrum.

Although the community of Capitol Hill was named for the glimmering white dome of the United States Capitol, this hip and diverse neighborhood is far more than its landmark government buildings and monuments. Defined roughly as the area north of I-695 bordered by Lincoln Park, Maryland Avenue, and the Capitol building, Capitol Hill is an energetic and upscale paradise for the always-on-the-go and those who love being at the center of it all.

The United States Capitol building was built in 1793, but its surrounding neighborhood didn’t begin its development until a few years later as the government became a major employer for DC residents. Modern Capitol Hill maintains a population of well-educated, motivated residents, who take pride in both the deep history of the neighborhood and its continued growth.

Grand, turn-key properties from the 19th century, pristine, multimillion-dollar row homes steeped in history, and fashionable condominiums tucked away in landmark buildings — all of this and more is available within the residential real estate market of Capitol Hill. Potential buyers often have a penchant for historic and luxury aesthetics and are enchanted by the neighborhood's plenitude of stylish options.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Between the trendy nightlife scene to the quiet parks and organic markets, Capitol Hill stands out from the crowd with the sheer variety held within its cheerful blocks. Residents are never more than a short walk away from intimate performance theaters and art galleries, making it a breeze to live a culturally enriching lifestyle.

Capitol Hill has enough appetizing restaurants to satiate any foodie, and among the options are establishments like Ted’s Bulletin. American comfort staples and an array of any-time-of-day dishes are available at Ted’s, which is a community favorite. Set in a modernized townhouse, Bullfrog Bagels is the go-to for fresh bagel treats and gourmet sandwiches, which can be paired with drinks like a delicious mimosa or rejuvenating cup of coffee.

One of the crown jewels of Capitol Hill's social scene is its famed Eastern Market, a destination located in the neighborhood's picturesque historic district. A day-to-day rotation of goods means that throughout the week, visitors can buy anything from artisan crafts and handmade gifts to meats and produce from local farmers. The Eastern Market is also a frequent host for community events, and its North Hall is renowned as an enviable wedding venue.

Things to Do

Of course, some of the biggest attractions to the Capitol Hill neighborhood are the landmark government buildings and monuments themselves, including the area’s namesake: The United States Capitol Building. Symbolic of America itself, this hallowed institution is open for tours to the public, who come from all over the world to get a glimpse at the nation’s inner workings.

Capitol Hill is also adjacent to the National Mall, which houses many of DC's other iconic monuments and buildings. Stretching more than two miles, this National Park space includes the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. It’s flanked by the White House to the north, the Capitol Building on the east, as well as two Smithsonian museums — The National Museum of History and the National Air and Space Museum — and the National Gallery of Art.

Schools

Capitol Hill is home to a number of excellent schools. Top educational opportunities include:

· National Cathedral School, 4-12, a highly-rated private and all-girls Episcopal school ranked as the #3 best private high school in DC and well-known for its STEM program

· St. Anselm’s Abbey School, 6-12, a highly-rated, private, all-boys Catholic school ranked as the #1 best boys’ Catholic high school in DC
